This installation was part of the " Cosmos archaeology "exhibition in 2023 at EPFL in Lausanne and was presented during the summer of 2024 at the Shanghai Astronomy Museum (China).
For Cosmos Archaeology, Pascal Bettex was invited to create an installation using a set of recycled SDSS plates. Pierced with nearly 600 small holes and placed at the focal plane of the 2.5-meter telescope at Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico, the plates were precisely aligned with a selection of stars, galaxies, or quasars. On an optimal night, SDSS astronomers could map 5,000 astronomical objects using up to nine plates. Pierced by light to create unfathomable constellations, "Star Mapping Sculpture" sets these disks in eccentric motion to reimagine the Universe and its orbital mechanics.
